Patio Installation in Oakland County, Michigan

Techo-Pro certified paver patios designed and built to last through decades of Michigan winters.

A New Patio Adds Usable Living Space to Your Home

A professionally installed patio extends your home's footprint into the outdoors and delivers one of the strongest returns on investment of any exterior improvement. According to the National Association of Realtors, homeowners who add a patio recover an average of 69% of the project cost at resale, while gaining years of daily enjoyment.

Earth Art Landscaping has been installing custom patios across Oakland County since 1987. As a Techo-Pro certified installer since 2018, we build with Techo-Bloc's premium paver systems and back our work with their extended manufacturer warranty. Every patio we install starts with a professional design consultation where we use landscape design software to create a scaled plan that fits your property, your budget, and your lifestyle.

Michigan homeowners face a unique challenge that separates a good patio from a great one: the freeze-thaw cycle. Oakland County experiences 50 to 60 freeze-thaw cycles per year, and each one can shift or heave pavers that sit on an inadequate base. Our installation method includes a minimum 12-inch excavation, compacted Class II aggregate installed in 3-inch lifts, and polymeric sand joints that lock everything in place. This is why our patios still look level and tight after 10, 15, even 20 years of Michigan weather.

Types of Patios We Install

Every property and homeowner is different. We offer multiple patio styles to match your aesthetic and functional needs.

Techo-Bloc Paver Patios

Our most popular option. Techo-Bloc pavers offer over 30 color and texture combinations, from the modern clean lines of Blu 60 Smooth to the timeless cobble look of Villagio. These premium pavers are manufactured to higher density standards than commodity products and carry a transferable lifetime warranty when installed by a certified Techo-Pro contractor like Earth Art.

Natural Flagstone Patios

Flagstone delivers an organic, one-of-a-kind aesthetic that complements naturalistic landscape designs. Each piece is unique in shape, color, and texture. We source Michigan-appropriate flagstone varieties including bluestone, limestone, and sandstone, and set them on either a mortared or dry-laid base depending on your design preferences and budget.

Permeable Paver Patios

Permeable pavers allow rainwater to filter through the surface and into the ground below, reducing stormwater runoff and helping manage drainage on properties with clay-heavy soil. Several Oakland County municipalities offer stormwater credits for permeable installations, which can offset long-term property costs.

How We Build a Patio That Lasts

The difference between a patio that lasts 5 years and one that lasts 25 years is almost entirely in the base preparation. Here is our proven installation process, refined over nearly four decades of work in Oakland County.

1. Design Consultation

We visit your property, take measurements, assess grading and drainage, and discuss your vision. Using professional landscape design software, we produce a scaled plan showing the patio layout, material selections, and how it integrates with your existing landscape.

2. Excavation & Base Preparation

We excavate to a minimum of 12 inches below finished grade. The excavated area receives compacted Class II road gravel installed in 3-inch lifts, each mechanically compacted to 95% density. This deep base is critical in Oakland County's clay soil, where moisture retention can cause frost heave.

3. Paver Installation & Finishing

Pavers are laid on a 1-inch bedding sand layer over the compacted base. Edge restraints are spiked into place around the perimeter. Polymeric sand fills every joint, and once activated with water, it hardens to lock the pavers together and resist weed growth, insects, and erosion.

Patio Installation FAQ

A typical 300-400 square foot paver patio takes 3 to 5 working days from excavation to completion. Larger projects with integrated features like seating walls, steps, or fire pit pads take 1 to 3 weeks. We build weather buffer days into every Oakland County project schedule because Michigan spring and summer can be unpredictable.

The ideal installation window is May through September, when soil temperatures support proper base compaction and polymeric sand activation. We recommend starting your design consultation in January through March so materials can be ordered and your project scheduled before the summer rush. Our spring renovation guide covers the optimal timing in detail.

Yes. As a Techo-Pro certified installer, our Techo-Bloc paver installations carry their extended manufacturer warranty, which is transferable to future homeowners. We also stand behind our workmanship. If any settling, heaving, or drainage issues develop due to installation, we address them at no additional cost.

Absolutely. Many Oakland County properties have grade changes that actually make for more interesting patio designs. We use retaining walls to create level platforms on sloped lots, and multi-tiered patios connected by stone steps can turn a challenging yard into a dramatic outdoor space. The key is proper engineering during the design phase.
