We design every water feature with winterization in mind, using flexible liner systems, recirculating pumps rated for Michigan's frost depth, and plumbing layouts that allow complete drainage before the first hard freeze. Winterization

Every water feature we install can be fully winterized. Pondless systems are drained and the pump removed for indoor storage. Ponds are transitioned to winter mode with floating de-icers that maintain a small opening in ice cover for gas exchange, protecting fish through the coldest months. We offer annual winterization and spring startup service for clients who prefer professional maintenance.

Drainage and Soil

Oakland County's predominantly clay soil actually works in our favor for pond installations -- it reduces water loss through seepage. However, clay soil creates drainage challenges around waterfalls and fountain bases where overflow can saturate surrounding areas. We grade the surrounding landscape to direct overflow away from structures and install French drains where necessary to prevent water from pooling near foundations or retaining walls.
