Water Features for Oakland County Landscapes

Custom ponds, waterfalls, and fountains that bring sound, movement, and wildlife to your outdoor space.

Water Features Add a Sensory Dimension to Your Landscape

A water feature introduces sound, movement, and reflected light that no other landscape element can provide. The sound of flowing water masks neighborhood noise, creates a calming atmosphere, and draws songbirds and pollinators to your property year after year.

Earth Art Landscaping has been designing and installing water features across Oakland County since 1987. Our founder Joe Hagen drew early inspiration from the classic gardens of Europe, where water has been a central design element for centuries. That philosophy -- landscaping with a purpose -- means every water feature we install is designed to look natural, function reliably, and integrate seamlessly with your surrounding landscape.

Michigan's climate presents specific challenges for water features. Freeze-thaw cycles, clay soil drainage patterns, and seasonal temperature swings of over 100 degrees require careful engineering. We design every water feature with winterization in mind, using flexible liner systems, recirculating pumps rated for Michigan's frost depth, and plumbing layouts that allow complete drainage before the first hard freeze. This attention to cold-climate engineering is what separates a water feature that lasts decades from one that cracks in its first winter.

Water features also increase property values. A study by the University of Michigan Extension found that well-maintained water features can increase perceived property value by 5% to 15%, depending on the home's price range and the quality of the installation. In Oakland County's competitive real estate market, this makes a water feature both an enjoyment investment and a financial one.

Water Features We Design and Install

From a simple bubbling boulder to a full backyard pond ecosystem, we build water features at every scale.

Pondless Waterfalls

Our most requested water feature. Water cascades over natural boulders and disappears into a hidden underground reservoir, where a pump recirculates it back to the top. No standing water means lower maintenance, no mosquito concerns, and safer installations for families with young children. Pondless waterfalls range from 3-foot cascades to multi-tier systems spanning 15 feet or more.

Garden Ponds

Full ecosystem ponds with aquatic plants, fish habitat, and natural filtration. We build ponds from 6 by 8 feet up to large-scale installations with multiple depths, marginal shelves for plantings, and integrated waterfalls for aeration. Our pond designs include biological filtration systems that maintain clear water with minimal chemical intervention.

Bubbling Boulders & Fountains

Compact water features that fit even small Oakland County yards. A drilled boulder with water bubbling from the top, or a stone basin fountain, creates the soothing sound of water without requiring much space. These self-contained features are ideal for courtyard gardens, front entry accents, or patio centerpieces.

Building Water Features for Michigan's Climate

Water features in Oakland County must be engineered for a climate that ranges from 95-degree summer days to subzero winter nights. Here is how we handle the two biggest challenges.

Winterization

Every water feature we install can be fully winterized. Pondless systems are drained and the pump removed for indoor storage. Ponds are transitioned to winter mode with floating de-icers that maintain a small opening in ice cover for gas exchange, protecting fish through the coldest months. We offer annual winterization and spring startup service for clients who prefer professional maintenance.

Drainage and Soil

Oakland County's predominantly clay soil actually works in our favor for pond installations -- it reduces water loss through seepage. However, clay soil creates drainage challenges around waterfalls and fountain bases where overflow can saturate surrounding areas. We grade the surrounding landscape to direct overflow away from structures and install French drains where necessary to prevent water from pooling near foundations or retaining walls.

Water Feature FAQ

Bubbling boulder features start around $3,000 to $5,000 installed. Pondless waterfalls range from $6,000 to $20,000 depending on size and complexity. Full ecosystem ponds with waterfalls typically start at $12,000 and can exceed $35,000 for large-scale installations. Every project is custom, so we provide a detailed estimate after an on-site consultation.

Moving water does not attract mosquitoes -- they require still, stagnant water to breed. Our pondless waterfalls and fountain features keep water in constant circulation, eliminating mosquito habitat. For ponds, the combination of water circulation, fish (which eat mosquito larvae), and natural bacterial treatments keeps mosquito populations at bay.

Pondless waterfalls and fountains are very low maintenance -- occasional leaf removal, an annual pump check, and winterization. Ponds require more attention: weekly skimming during fall leaf drop, seasonal filter cleaning, and monitoring water levels during summer heat. Most Oakland County homeowners spend 15 to 30 minutes per week on pond maintenance during the active season.
