Natural Stone Patio Installation in Oakland County
Flagstone, bluestone, and limestone patios hand-laid by craftsmen with 39 years of experience in Michigan.
Natural Stone Creates a Patio Unlike Any Other
Natural stone patios deliver an organic, one-of-a-kind aesthetic that manufactured pavers cannot replicate. Every slab of flagstone, bluestone, or limestone has unique color variations, veining, and texture that create a surface with genuine character and depth.
Earth Art Landscaping has been working with natural stone since 1987, and our founder Joe Hagen developed his appreciation for stone work while studying classic European gardens. That design philosophy -- landscaping with a purpose -- means every stone patio we install is planned not just for appearance, but for how it integrates with the surrounding landscape, the architecture of the home, and the way your family actually uses the space.
Natural stone is also remarkably durable in Michigan's climate. Properly selected stone varieties handle freeze-thaw cycles without spalling or cracking, and natural stone surfaces develop a patina over time that actually improves their appearance. A bluestone patio installed today will look even better in 20 years, with the soft weathering that gives stone its timeless quality.
The key to a long-lasting stone patio in Oakland County is proper selection and installation. Not all stone types perform equally in Michigan's freeze-thaw environment. We source stone varieties with low absorption rates -- typically under 3% -- which means they resist moisture penetration and the cracking that follows when trapped water freezes. Our installation methods account for the irregular shapes and thicknesses of natural stone, with adjusted base depths and setting bed techniques that keep the surface level and stable for decades.
Popular Stone Options for Oakland County Patios
Each stone type brings different qualities. Here is what works best in Michigan.
Bluestone
The most popular natural stone for Michigan patios. Pennsylvania bluestone offers a blue-gray base color with subtle rust and brown accents. Available in thermal-finished (smooth, consistent thickness) or natural cleft (textured, irregular). Excellent freeze-thaw resistance with absorption rates typically under 2%.
Limestone
Warm gray and buff tones that complement traditional and transitional home styles. Indiana limestone is a favored choice for Oakland County projects, offering consistent quality and proven durability in northern climates. Limestone pairs beautifully with Techo-Bloc wall products for raised patios and step installations.
Flagstone
A general term for flat, layered stone available in sandstone, quartzite, and slate varieties. Flagstone offers the most natural, organic look and works exceptionally well for garden patios, irregularly shaped sitting areas, and pathways that weave through planted areas. We select flagstone with minimum 1.5-inch thickness for Michigan patio applications.
Dry-Laid vs. Mortared Stone Patios
The two primary installation methods for natural stone patios each have advantages in Oakland County's climate. Your choice depends on the look you want, your budget, and the specific conditions of your property.
Dry-Laid Stone Patios
Dry-laid installation sets stone on a compacted gravel base with a sand setting bed, similar to paver installation. Joints are filled with polymeric sand or planted with low-growing groundcovers like creeping thyme. This method allows individual stones to flex independently during freeze-thaw cycles, which reduces cracking risk. Dry-laid patios are also easier to repair because individual stones can be lifted and re-set without disturbing the surrounding surface.
Mortared Stone Patios
Mortared installation bonds stone to a concrete slab with mortar and fills joints with matching mortar or grout. This creates a completely solid, smooth surface that is easier to keep clean and works well for formal outdoor dining areas. However, mortared patios require a properly reinforced concrete base to resist Oakland County's frost heave, which adds to the project cost. Any cracking in the concrete base will telegraph through to the stone surface.
Stone Patio FAQ
Natural stone patios in Oakland County typically range from $25 to $50 per square foot installed, depending on the stone type and installation method. A 300-square-foot bluestone patio generally costs $10,000 to $18,000 including excavation, base preparation, stone, and installation. Flagstone tends to be slightly less expensive, while premium limestone and thermal-finished bluestone sit at the higher end. We provide detailed estimates after an on-site consultation.
Surface texture matters. Natural cleft flagstone and thermal-finished bluestone both provide good traction, even when wet. Honed or polished stone surfaces can be slippery and are not recommended for outdoor patios in Michigan. We always recommend stone with a textured finish for any surface that will be walked on, and proper grading ensures water drains off the surface rather than pooling.
Natural stone patios require very little maintenance. Sweep debris regularly, rinse with a garden hose as needed, and avoid pressure washing on high settings, which can damage softer stone like sandstone. For dry-laid patios, check polymeric sand joints annually and top up if erosion has occurred. A penetrating stone sealer applied every 3 to 5 years helps resist staining without altering the stone's natural appearance.
